SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL LEGISLATIVE ACTION
Go to this web site to find your officials and to stay on top
of legislation affecting you:
- Know who your elected representatives are.
- Know their local and Capitol offices, addresses and phone numbers. Also
know this information for county and city elected officials.
- Meet with, and get to know your local legislative staff people; and the
staffs of the local elected officials.
- Communicate regularly and early with your elected officials, not just when
you want something!
- Tell them what your priorities are and what your positions are on them.
- Ask them how they stand on these issues.
- When writing to an elected official on an issue, be specific, be sure your
facts are accurate, be brief, and don't threaten or beg.
- If your representative votes for your issue be sure to thank him or her.
- If your representative votes against your issue, ask why.
- If you are successful with action on an issue, let people know of your success.
- Don't be afraid to express your opinions on issues. Most elected officials
want, and all of them need to know, how you feel.
- Don't ever think that your one letter or call is unimportant. Local legislative
and political action are vital to our whole process of government.
- Have fun! And remember....
"Politicians see the light when they feel the heat."
